Kyle Seeback, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, today denounced the homophobic comments made by Bob Currie, Mayor of the Township of Amaranth, during a recent council meeting.
“Bob Currie's statements were absolutely disgraceful. I fully condemn his statements and his clarifications,” said Mr. Seeback. “The time to make excuses for people who make discriminatory comments and statements is over.”
The Mayor’s comments were made following a letter, received by the Township of Amaranth, from a resident inquiring about whether the Township of Amaranth would be alone in not flying the Pride Flag and what other municipalities had chosen to do with respect to flying the flag. The letter in question was presented during a regular meeting of Council on June 17, 2020.
“The LGBTQ2 community has faced and continues to face enough prejudice and persecution,” said Mr. Seeback. “They should not have to endure comments like this from elected officials. Mayor Currie needs to immediately apologize for his comments or he should immediately resign.” Mr. Seeback went on to state, “If we fail to call out those who make such contemptible and immensely hurtful statements, our silence makes us complicit and we take a considerable step backwards in achieving inclusivity, equal rights, and mutual respect for each other.”
